This painting is of an East Van centenarian character house. I lived there during a time of big change and transition. It was a fortunate port in a storm and I was lucky to find it. My then ten year old son agreed it was a good place because we could have a cat, and so we moved in.
I love the opportunity to paint places that I know well so there’s some unconscious personification here. The downstairs part, where Jack and I lived, ended up looking mischievously monkey-like. I suppose that makes sense, given my son. There’s also a sort of arched-eyebrow ginger look to the place. That makes sense, too. I hope it remains as vibrant as I will always remember it.
