Some days I don’t even get to work until 7 pm. When I ride my bike through Vancouver’s urban corridors during the 7 pm cheer, I look up and wonder if this is the first time the folks in the high-rises have actually seen their neighbours.
I normally never put people in my paintings. For some reason, I prefer the barren aesthetic of an empty landscape so I can have the scene all to myself. But I love drawing people. Whenever I wanted to feel less alone as a kid, I would draw scenes full of people doing things, like my entire Brownie troop all doing activities or a gymnasium filled with classmates playing games. I always found the busyness of these scenes curiously relaxing even if I wasn’t part of them.
All the people here are archetypes of Vancouver; I even know some of them personally. 😉
