  • Color of Industry II•

Orange is one of those colors that doesn’t have a negative association. It represents citrus, zest, endurance, and embers.

The stevedore cranes of East Van are visible almost everywhere you go in Vancouver. On gray days, they’re the biggest hit of color against an often bleak landscape.

There’s a natural east-west opposition here. This view is from the water with a recognizable downtown Vancouver in the middle. The cranes represent the East Van working class. Cranes lift heavy things. They’re the personification of manual labour in that they are strong, muscular, and vital.

This view of downtown is from the water and the light is coming from the left. That’s symbolic.
